Information about waste production is gathered from those companies in Åland who either transport or treat waste. The produced waste is defined by EWC-codes (The European Waste Classification). The EWC-codes where developed by the European Union in order to provide a standardisation for comparing waste statistics within EU. EWC-codes classify waste materials and categorises them according to what they are and how they were produced. They also define whether waste should be considered hazardous or non-hazardous. The industry where the waste is produced is defined by NACE codes (National Activities Classification of Economics). NACE codes represent the statistical classification of economic activities within the European Union. NACE divides companies, organisations and similar economic activities into different industries. As of 2008, the industrial classification used in waste statistics complies with the revised statistical classification of economic activities, NACE Rev. 2 . Previously, an earlier revision of the industrial classification has been used (NI-2002). Because of this, sectoral comparisons with waste statistics published earlier than 2009 are not possible. In the revised statistics, the corporations are classified based on their principal activities on December 31, 2007. Common sludges is presented in dry matter in the tables. Dry matter is the result of a sewage treatment works, i.e. the water is removed. The weight of the dry matter depends on the efficiency of the sewage treatment works. Figures for the years 2010-2014 are revised.
