A social accounting matrix (SAM) describes economic transaction flows in an
area that can be a village, region or country. The data in the matrix reflects flows
of resources between inputs, activities and markets.
The central part of a SAM IS based on the national accounts of the region,
but other parts of a SAM describes transfers between actors which do not
represent production. A SAM gives an overall picture of the economic flows during
a year. Sources of income for each SAM account can be read from the rows
of the SAM, while columns register use of resources.
